It’s curious that we don’t give more thought to our existence. We get up each morning, experience the joys and challenges of the day, and go to bed at night without dwelling on the larger context of our thoughts, feelings, and actions. We live in the moment in order to survive and to derive satisfaction from our existence. Who has time to think about the bigger picture? But we all, at one time or another—because of a particular life experience or a certain set of circumstances, or simply when enjoying a few moments of quiet thought—have wondered what it all means and how it all fits together, why we’re here and why our lives are as they are. We can use objective morality to help us understand the right and wrong of particular choices in particular circumstances; we can also consider how our lives generally embody and reflect the principles of existence. By looking at our lives from this perspective, we can understand more about why we exist as we do.
